READING

I encourage everyone to read. Read as much as possible. I think that reading will be very helpful for your English learning!

Any type of reading is good whether it be books, magazines, or newspapers. What you read can be in hardcopy or online.

However, whatever you read should be ONLY in English! Do not get books that have English on one side and Chinese on the other side. Having the Chinese available to look at will not encourage you to learn and understand the English.

Make sure you choose the reading level that's best for you. What your friend or classmate read may not be the best choice for you. Choose a book or other reading material that is neither too difficult nor too easy for YOU. There should not be too many words that you don't know but there should be some words that you don't know.

When you read, don't look up in the dictionary every word that you don't know. Try to figure out the word's meaning by the context. There should be only a few words that you need to look up in a dictionary for you to get the meaning of what is written.

If you get a book that is too difficult for you, put it aside and find one that is a little easier. Later when your reading has improved you can read the more difficult one. It is better to start easier and work up to more difficult books. DON'T look for the harder ones first!

I have developed two reading lists. The first list contains easier books. The second list contains books that are considered more classical. In the second list I have tired to put the easier ones first in the list and the more difficult ones later in the list. Occasionally, I wasn't able to determine the best level of the book.
